10 Romantic Things to Do in Barmouth

Posted on August 31st, 2018

Coes Faen is a romantic destination with a difference. Wander hand-in-hand through acres of private natural woodland, taking in breathtaking views of the majestic Mawddach Estuary, and mountains beyond, indulge in treatments to relax and refresh, or toast your special occasion immersed in our sumptuous cedar hot-tub set on a secluded rock terrace

If you can bear to tear yourselves away from Coes Faen we have 10 suggestions to continue your romantic adventure within 20 minutes drive from sunset walks on beautiful beaches to cycling to idyllic picnic places hidden deep within Coed y Brenin Forest Park.

1. Watch the tumbling waters at Coed y Brenin Forest Park

Cycle, run, ride or walk your way to breathtaking waterfalls, rivers, viewpoints and historic sites inside this wildly beautiful park in the midst of Snowdonia. Take a picnic or stop off at the Visitor Centre cafe and collect sweet treats and a map before discovering hidden gems including the the gold mine trail and ancient geological marvels.

2. And now for something completely different

Learn and new sporting skill, and laugh a lot. Sign up for a paddle boarding session together and see who can find their balance and stand up first, or get a dunking. Wet suits, equipment provided by knowledgeable instructors.

3. Conquer Cader

For outdoor types with all the gear and skills for mountain walking then conquering the 3,000ft mountain Cader Idris is irresistible. The summit is readily seen from Coes Faen, apart from when there is low cloud. We can provide a picnic lunch if required. Walking on the lower paths of the mountain also rewards the effort with hidden lakes and spectacular views.

4. Kings, invaders and…cake

The awesome sight of Harlech Castle is just a short car or train ride away, with ramparts, twisty tower staircases and a drawbridge entrance dominating the town of Harlech. Indulge afterwards with cake and coffee in the modern visitor centre which offers panoramic views of the historic castle and the whole Snowdonia mountain range.

5. Walk across a 150 year old bridge

It’s a ‘must do’ at Barmouth to walk or cycle along this 150 year old bridge with a break to take an iconic photograph with Coes Faen Lodge and The Clockhouse in the background. If you’re feeling fit then the Mawddach Trail continues all the way to Dolgellau on a disused railway bed. Or climb up to the aptly named Panorama Walk from Barmouth, this short trail is just at the back of our land. A popular lunch is fish and chips in Barmouth eaten on the secluded spot somewhere along the mile-long promenade.

6. A ferry ride for two and Bay boat trips

Hop on a ferry from Barmouth quay, travel through the harbour and under Barmouth Railway Bridge to see Coes Faen for the seaward side. This scene-stealing journey also takes in the ‘sleeping giant’ resting in the lee of Cader Idris and the rich bird life living along the estuary.

Take a longer trip out into Cardigan Bay and maybe you’ll be lucky enough to steal a glimpse of the wonderful local marine wildlife such as Dolphins, Porpoise and even Grey Atlantic Seals. Irrespective, the view of Barmouth and its magnificent Snowdonia backdrop coming back to harbour is unforgettable.

7. Watch the sun dip below the horizon

Snuggle together at Coes Faen and watch a stunning sunset - or sunrise for early risers - tinge the waters of the Mawddach pink. Or stroll through the sand dunes at Barmouth to catch the last rays of light. Then on magical clear nights moonlight shines on the now sparkling surface on the estuary.

8. Take a walk through our walled gardens

Explore 30 acres of romantic scenery right on site at Coes Faen. Take a hand-in-hand walk and discover all the hidden treasures our very private gardens have to offer. You can enjoy the peaceful waters boasting delicate water lilies or reach the swing for the perfect photo-op with sweeping views of everything Snowdonia has to offer. The whole woodland is crisscrossed with paths, originally built by the Victorian owners, and recently restored.
